The sudden, shotgun-like sound of a bicycle blowout
In short: A flat tire is more than just a loss of air. From puncture wounds from city glass to the startling explosion of a blowout, understanding the mechanics of your tire's failure is the first step toward a successful repair.
When a cyclist encounters a flat, the cause is rarely just a simple hole. The first step in diagnosis involves inspecting the tire for debris. In urban environments like New York City, glass is a frequent culprit, often protruding from the rubber. After removing the tire to expose the inner tube, you must check the tire's interior carefully. It is vital to look for embedded fragments, such as metal or glass, while being cautious not to cut your fingers during the inspection.
One common issue is the 'pinch flat,' often referred to as a 'snake bite.' This occurs when the tire is not inflated to the correct pressure, which is a value typically found printed on the tire's sidewall (for example, between 40 to 60 psi or 80 to 100 psi). When pressure is too low, the tire can compress against the rim when hitting an object like a rock or a pothole, pinching the tube.
A more dramatic failure is the blowout. This happens if the tire is not seated correctly on the rim. Under pressure, the tube can escape the tire and hit the rim, resulting in an explosion that can sound like a shotgun blast. While some flats are caused by punctures from objects that later exit the tire, others—such as large holes or improper seating—may require you to replace both the tube and the tire entirely.
