The foundation of a successful installation begins with the tube. Rather than inserting a limp tube, professional mechanics recommend pumping it up slightly first. This gives the tube a rounded shape, making it much easier to maneuver inside the tire and, crucially, preventing it from getting caught or pinched during the process. When working with the tire itself, always check the direction of the tread. The tread pattern must align with the rotation of the wheel, following the direction of the gears.

A useful trick for identifying leaks is to position the tire's label directly over the valve. If you encounter a flat, you can inflate the tube and immediately locate the hole. Once the tube is inside, start by placing the valve through the rim and pulling the tire over the tube. Begin seating the tire sidewall onto the rim starting at the valve, then work your way around. To finish the difficult sections, you can use a tire lever in reverse—turned upside down—to hook the tire onto the rim.

Safety depends on the tire's seating and inflation. You must monitor the seam that runs around the tire; this seam should be even on both sides of the rim. If the tire is not seated properly, it can lead to a dangerous blowout. As you inflate, use a pump gauge to monitor the pressure. Never exceed the maximum inflation pressure listed on the tire's sidewall, such as 65 psi. Finally, ensure the valve is secure: tighten the screw on Presta valves or replace the cap on Schrader valves to keep dirt out.
