Defeating the Deer: Sensory Tactics and Strategic Planting for Gardens

How to Deer-Proof Shrubs | This Old House · 4:14 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Protecting your landscape from deer browsing requires more than just a fence. This guide explores how to use sensory deterrents and specific plant selections to keep your shrubs intact.

Landscape contractor Roger Cook outlines several methods to deter deer using scent and motion. These include hanging nylon mesh bags filled with human hair, using strong-smelling deodorant bar soap (drilled with a 1/2-inch spade bit), and applying bitter-tasting, odiferous liquid chemicals to foliage. For physical barriers, nylon-mesh netting and motion-detector sprinklers can also be deployed.

Alternatively, selecting deer-resistant species can minimize damage. Based on a survey of 740 gardeners who scored 185 different plants, certain varieties like Berberis, Buddleja davidii, and Forsythia showed a 20% or less chance of being damaged by deer.
