Why your well water pump might be driving up your electricity bill

How to Diagnose Problems with Well Water Systems | Ask This Old House · 3:29 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Plumbing expert Richard Trethewey explains how well water pumps function and how issues within your pressure system can cause the pump to run too frequently.

Well pumps, which can be located at the bottom of a well or inside a basement, typically connect to one of two pressure systems. The first is a large pressure tank containing water at the bottom and an air charge at the top. If the pump cycles on and off every time a faucet is opened, the air charge may be waterlogged and require recharging.

The second system uses a neoprene bladder to separate the air and water reservoirs, preventing oversaturation. If a pump in this setup runs too frequently, it likely indicates the bladder has failed, allowing the air and water to mix. In such cases, a qualified well technician should be consulted for inspection and repair.
