The physics of the dip: why relaxing your head reduces tension
In short: In West Coast Swing, a successful dip is less about lifting and more about weight distribution. By mastering the 'sit dip,' dancers can create a dramatic visual while ensuring the partner feels secure rather than fearful. It turns a high-impact move into a controlled, shared physical dialogue.
The sit dip is a specific technique in West Coast Swing designed to prioritize the partner's safety and comfort. Unlike more aggressive maneuvers, this style requires the lady to maintain most of her own weight over one leg—specifically the right leg in many configurations. By bending into that leg and 'sitting' slightly, she supports herself while the lead provides the directional rotation and stability.
Mechanically, the lead executes a lunge to their left, placing weight on the left foot with the right leg kept straight and the knee forward. The hands are positioned above the outside of the partner's shoulder blades rather than on her back. This positioning allows the lead to rotate the partner into the dip while she remains grounded. Because she is supporting herself, there is less social fear for the dancer being dipped.
The nuance lies in tension management. If a lady keeps her head up and looks at her partner during the dip, it creates significant neck tension and physical stress. To achieve a more relaxed arch with less effort on the back, the dancer should lay her head back and push her belly button up. For partners with high trust, a 'body weighted' dip is possible where she gives over her weight, but even then, relaxing the head remains the key to reducing bodily tension.
Transitioning into this move typically follows a sequence of walking, triple steps, or rock steps. A common path involves an inside turn followed by a sit dip, which can be held for any duration before transitioning back into a triple-triple step or a side pass.
