Mastering the half guard: why position is everything in mixed martial arts

How to Do 2 Half Guard Basics | MMA Fighting · 3:26 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: In the high-stakes arena of MMA, survival depends on more than just strength. To defend against a dominant opponent, you must master specific structural positions. Learn how to use leg locks and underhooks to neutralize strikes and set the stage for your own counter-attacks.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, the mantra is 'position before submission.' When fighting from the bottom in a half guard, the primary goal is to prevent the top opponent from establishing an underhook. If an opponent secures an underhook, they can drive their elbow into your face or throat, creating openings for devastating strikes. To counter this, coach Rene Dreifuss of Team Radical MMA emphasizes the importance of controlling the opponent's limbs to neutralize their offensive capabilities.

The first fundamental position involves a 'lock down' technique. This is achieved by placing your inside leg under the opponent's leg and your outside leg over their thigh, then squeezing your knees together and stretching both legs equally. To prevent the opponent from using their elbow to strike, you must secure an underhook on the same side as your extended leg. This can be done by turning the opponent's head or 'pummeling' their elbow away to establish control.

The second fundamental position is used when a lock down cannot be immediately established. In this scenario, the risk of being struck is high because the opponent can use their hands and elbows effectively. To mitigate this, you must hip escape (or hip out) and bring your feet in to cross them. By sliding your knee in and maintaining a tight grip, you can eventually transition back into the primary lock down position. This structural setup also creates an opportunity: if the opponent remains static, you can use the momentum to transition and take their back.
