Mastering the Rumba: The Geometry of the Ladies Underarm Turn
In short: Ballroom dance is a study in controlled physics. In the Rumba, the underarm turn requires a specific spatial awareness where the lady must navigate a three-step rotation while maintaining a precise connection with her partner. It is less about spinning and more about walking a deliberate path.
The Rumba ladies underarm turn is built upon the foundation of the box step, a fundamental ballroom movement. Instructors Aaron and Kristina from New York City emphasize that while the visual result is a graceful rotation, the underlying footwork remains consistent with the basic action. The sequence begins with a 'slow, quick, quick' rhythm, leading into a 'slow, side, together' movement. This structure ensures that the dancer maintains balance and momentum throughout the transition.
The technical execution of the turn relies on a specific shift in the lead's arm position. As the gentleman steps back on his right foot, he drops his right arm and opens his hand to the lady's left hand. This creates the 'underarm' space. The lady then initiates her turn by stepping forward on her left foot directly toward her partner. A common mistake is crossing the foot in anticipation of the turn; instead, the dancer must step directly into the partner's space to establish the correct trajectory.
To visualize the rotation, the movement is compared to walking around the rim of a bucket. The lady executes three forward steps—right, left, right—moving in a circular path. This is followed by a 'left side, close right' movement to reset the position. By following this specific sequence, the dancers return to the closed basic position, completing the geometric requirements of the turn while staying in sync with the music's timing.
