Mastering the Rumba: How to execute a seamless underarm turn and Cuban walk

In short: Transitioning from a closed position to an open Cuban walk requires more than just footwork. It demands a heightened sense of awareness to ensure both partners stay on the right foot. Learn how to use subtle signals and rotational movement to navigate this intricate ballroom sequence without losing the rhythm.

The Rumba underarm turn begins from a standard closed position using the basic rhythmic pattern of slow, quick, quick. As the sequence progresses, the lady performs a normal underarm turn while the gentleman steps through a window, passing behind her. This transition leads into a side-by-side position, a key structural element of the movement.

A critical mechanic involves the relationship between the partners' directions. While the lady continues a forward walking pattern around a circle, the gentleman acts as the 'center of the wheel,' walking backward. This rotational dynamic requires the lady to maintain her forward steps and the gentleman to rotate himself to accommodate her movement around the rim.

The most delicate phase occurs when the gentleman must signal the lady to turn back to face him. This requires an advanced sense of awareness to avoid turning her too early or too late, which could prove disastrous for the dance's flow. The signal is delivered via a subtle flick of the left hand—not a large jerk of the arm—as the gentleman steps on his left foot and the lady steps on her right.

To maintain the rhythm, dancers must strictly adhere to the count. The sequence follows a specific tempo: slow, quick, quick, followed by the lady's walking steps and the gentleman's backward movement. Keeping in sync with this count ensures both partners remain on the right foot throughout the transition back to the basic action.
