The delicate art of the elbow lock in Aikido
In short: In the martial art of Aikido, Hiji Waza techniques are designed to target the elbow joint. While these moves were originally intended to break the limb, modern practitioners must master the precise leverage required to control an opponent without causing permanent injury.
Hiji Waza, which translates to 'elbow technique,' encompasses a variety of maneuvers in Aikido. The name itself is derived from 'Hiji,' meaning elbow, and 'Waza,' meaning technique. While the historical intent of these moves was often to break the elbow, contemporary training emphasizes control and safety to prevent injury during practice.
One fundamental approach involves the Gyaku Hanmi grab. To execute this, a practitioner lifts the arm as if initiating a Nikkyo, rolling the arm over and under to clamp the elbow tightly underneath their own arm. For maximum leverage, the practitioner's weight must remain above the partner's shoulder. By stepping back and creating an opening, the practitioner can lead the elbow away, a movement known as Hiji Kime. Success depends on a solid connection and ensuring the partner moves with the momentum; if the pressure is released too early, the partner can simply stand up.
Other variations focus on creating space and applying pressure. In certain techniques, the practitioner must first remove the partner's hand, often referred to as Kaiten, to open the space necessary for the lock. By reaching underneath the elbow and barring it against the forearm, a practitioner can use their fingers to curl inward, applying pressure in the opposite direction of the joint. This method is particularly potent, as the point of pain often coincides with the threshold of a break. Other methods, such as Hiji Nage, utilize a throwing motion, where the practitioner steps to the side and uses the elbow as a lever to redirect the partner's momentum.
Regardless of the specific technique, the core principle remains the same: using leverage and body positioning to manipulate the joint while maintaining a safe training environment.
