How magicians exploit your brain's inability to distinguish similar shapes

How to Do the 6/9 Card Trick | Coin & Card Magic · 3:57 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: The six and nine are visually similar enough to confuse the human brain, making them perfect tools for a classic card trick. By combining a psychological 'force' with a physical momentum technique, a magician can make it appear as though they are manipulating magnetic fields to retrieve cards you chose.

The 6/9 card trick relies on a specific psychological phenomenon: the brain has a hard time separating the visual identities of a six and a nine. Because they look so similar, the magician can use this ambiguity to perform a 'force.' A force is a technique where the magician leads the spectator to believe they have a free choice, while in reality, the magician has dictated which cards are selected. In this specific trick, the magician uses a 'crisscross force' to ensure the spectator picks the six of clubs and the nine of spades.

The secret lies in a pre-arranged deck setup. The magician places the six of spades on the bottom, followed by the nine of clubs, the six of clubs, and finally the nine of spades on top. To execute the force, the magician asks the spectator to cut the deck and mark a spot. While the spectator believes they are marking a random location, the magician uses the cut as a marker to guide them back to the top of the deck. By using distractions—such as a long explanation about the Earth's magnetic field—the magician ensures the spectator forgets that the 'marked' spot was actually the top of the deck.

Once the spectator takes the two cards from the top, the magician places the rest of the deck back on top. The spectator then slides their cards anywhere into the deck. The magician then uses a physical maneuver: they crease the cards and hold the top and bottom of the deck. By quickly swinging their arm, the momentum of the motion causes the deck to fall away, leaving only the two cards in their hand. The entire effect is built on a foundation of misdirection, visual similarity, and a simple mastery of physics.
