It is not the Jerk: mastering the hip-hop Reject

In short: Many dancers mistake this rhythmic movement for the Jerk, but the Reject requires a specific, alternating footwork pattern. Learning to coordinate your jumps and steps is the key to transitioning from a simple shuffle to a high-energy dance move that keeps the party moving.

The Reject is a fundamental hip-hop move characterized by a rhythmic, alternating hopping pattern. While it is frequently misidentified as the Jerk, the technical execution relies on a specific sequence of weight shifts and foot placements. The movement begins with a stable stance, often starting to the side, where you lift one leg—for example, the left foot—and jump forward while keeping the opposite foot planted. The instructor suggests starting the sequence from a position where you are standing to the side.

Once you have landed forward, the trailing foot is brought behind you. The core of the dance involves a continuous cycle: you jump forward with the lead foot, place the trailing foot behind, and then immediately repeat the process by jumping forward with the foot that was just moved to the back. This creates a fluid, back-and-forth motion that can be performed at varying speeds. The pattern can be repeated many times in a continuous loop, essentially alternating between hopping forward and stepping back.

While the footwork provides the foundation, the visual impact of the Reject is enhanced by arm movement. The technique allows for personal expression; you can move your arms however you like, provided they are active. The primary goal of the move is not just technical precision, but maintaining energy and enjoyment. As the tempo increases to match the music, the dance becomes a test of coordination, but the essential element remains the ability to keep moving and having fun. The movement can even be performed while turning. The instructor emphasizes that as long as you are enjoying yourself, you are unstoppable.
