The subtle rhythmic shift between a touch step and a step touch
In short: In line dancing, the difference between two movements can be entirely invisible to the eye but profound to the ear. Mastering the distinction between a touch step and a step touch requires understanding how weight distribution and rhythmic snapping change the entire feel of the dance.
The foundation of these movements lies in the 'touch,' which involves placing a foot down with no weight on it. According to world champion Robert Royston, a touch step follows a pattern where you touch first and then step onto that foot. This sequence can be performed in any direction—forward, side, or back—and can even be modified into a 'heel switch' by simply accenting the heel during the touch phase.
The 'step touch' is structurally similar but operates on a different rhythmic pulse. In a touch step, the dancer touches on the odd counts (one, three, five, or seven) and closes on the even counts (two, four, six, or eight). Conversely, in a step touch, the dancer steps on the odd counts and touches on the even counts. This shift in timing changes the physical momentum of the movement.
To internalize these differences, dancers use snapping as a rhythmic guide. For a touch step, the snap occurs on the step; for a step touch, the snap occurs on the touch. This audible cue helps dancers maintain the correct cadence while moving through complex sequences.
These basic building blocks eventually combine into more advanced figures like the Monterey turn. This popular move utilizes a touch step followed by a half-rotation turn. By repeating the sequence—touch, step, touch, then a back turn—dancers create a fluid rotation that serves as a cornerstone of many country dance routines.
