Why the old-fashioned bowl of pellets is failing your rabbit
In short: For decades, pet store pellets were the standard for rabbit care. Modern nutritional science reveals this approach is insufficient. To maintain a healthy, energetic companion, owners must shift from a single-source meal to a complex, high-fiber diet that mimics natural foraging behaviors.
The cornerstone of a rabbit's health is high-quality timothy hay. Unlike many other pets, rabbits cannot be overfed on hay; it is essential for their dental health and digestive systems. Because small bags from pet stores are often expensive and lack freshness, experts suggest purchasing in flakes, half-bales, or full bales to ensure a constant supply of clean forage.
Managing this diet requires specific logistics. To manage the mess created by rabbits eating and defecating at once, provide a tall litter tray filled with newspaper or specific rabbit bedding; steer clear of wood shavings or chips due to potential lung issues. The daily volume of hay provided should roughly equal the rabbit's body weight, allowing enough space for them to dig into and rest on their food.
Nutritional balance also involves precise portioning of supplements. While pellets are not a primary meal, they provide necessary vitamins; a two- to three-pound rabbit requires about two tablespoons daily, while a five-pounder needs one-quarter cup. Furthermore, the type of pellet matters with age: alfalfa-based pellets are suitable for rabbits under six months old, but owners should switch to timothy-based pellets thereafter.
Fresh leafy greens and restricted treats complete the profile. Depending on weight, daily green portions range from half a cup (for those under two pounds) to one full cup (for those over five pounds). While carrots are popular in media, their high sugar content makes them unsuitable for regular consumption, relegating them to occasional small treats.
