Why your backyard grass might be a lethal threat to your pet rabbit
In short: A rabbit's diet is remarkably simple, yet a single foraging mistake can be fatal. While grass hay is the essential foundation, outdoor grazing carries the risk of lethal parasites from wildlife. Understanding the correct balance of pellets, greens, and hay is vital for keeping your pet safe and healthy.
A healthy rabbit diet is built on a foundation of fiber, specifically grass hay like Timothy hay. According to experts, the most critical component is maintaining a constant supply of hay, which forms the wide base of the rabbit food pyramid. Above this layer, the diet should include leafy greens and a measured portion of high-fiber pellets. For a rabbit weighing five pounds, a daily serving of roughly one quarter of a cup of pellets is recommended, though this should be adjusted for smaller animals.
The danger lies in the transition from controlled hay to wild foraging. While wild rabbits graze in yards, domestic rabbits face significant risks from parasites found in outdoor grass. In areas like New York, raccoons can spread Baylisascaris procyonis, a type of raccoon roundworm. If a rabbit ingests these parasites while grooming its feet after contact with contaminated ground, the result is often lethal, as there is currently no known cure or treatment.
Nutritional nuance also extends to the variety of greens provided. While many owners avoid iceberg lettuce due to its lack of nutritional value, dark greens like romaine, parsley, cilantro, and herbs like basil or dill are excellent choices. There is ongoing debate regarding the cruciferous vegetable family—including broccoli and cauliflower—as some believe they predisposed rabbits to gas. However, recent personal experimentation suggests that small, controlled quantities of broccoli may be safely tolerated without adverse reactions.
