Why smoothing over textured ceilings is often better than scraping them away

In short: Removing heavy ceiling texture can be a grueling, messy ordeal. However, professional painter Mauro Henrique suggests a more efficient alternative. By using joint compound to fill the gaps rather than stripping the surface, you can achieve a modern, flat finish with significantly less labor and physical strain.

The traditional instinct when facing a bumpy, popcorn-style ceiling is to scrape the texture off entirely. While this is a common tactic, it can be incredibly labor-intensive and messy. According to Mauro Henrique of Ask This Old House, applying layers of joint compound over the existing texture is often a much easier way to achieve a smooth, flat surface.

The process begins with meticulous preparation. To protect the workspace, use a canvas drop cloth for the floor and plastic drop cloths for the walls, covering at least the top third of the wall surface. The ceiling itself must be wiped clean with a damp rag before any material is applied. The compound is then mixed using a drill and a mixing bit until it reaches a consistency slightly thicker than cake batter.

Execution relies on patience and thin applications rather than heavy, single layers. Using a hawk and a taping knife, apply the compound in smooth, thin coats. It is important not to attempt to fill all low spots in a single pass. Instead, allow roughly 45 minutes for the first coat to dry before applying a second. This process typically requires two to three coats to fully level the surface.

Once the low spots are filled, the final step involves a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper after 24 hours of drying time. For the best results, Henrique recommends finishing the project with a flat, white paint. While a step ladder is sufficient for the task, using rented staging can provide a safer and more comfortable working height.
