How to restore century-old wood molding without stripping every layer of paint

In short: Decades of accumulated paint can leave wood molding with unsightly ridges and heavy buildup. You do not need to strip it all away to achieve a smooth finish. With a few strategic steps involving sanding, priming, and a custom compound, you can create a brand new surface in just a few hours.

When dealing with historic woodwork, the goal is often restoration rather than total removal. In buildings where paint may have accumulated for a hundred years, stripping every layer is often too time-consuming. Instead, the process focuses on smoothing out the existing topography. This begins with using a heavy 60-grit sander or manual sanding to knock off large, protruding pieces of old paint and ridges.

Once the most significant irregularities are removed, the exposed wood must be sealed. Applying a solvent-based primer to large exposed spots prevents the wood from reacting poorly to subsequent layers. After the primer has set, the real transformation occurs through the creation of a 'new skin.' This is achieved by mixing wood filler with joint compound to create a specialized patching compound. This mixture is skimmed over the surface to build a new, level edge.

The application requires precision; if the compound is applied too thickly, it risks cracking as it dries. The process may require a second coat to address any bubbles that appear during the drying phase, which can take anywhere to overnight. Once dry, the surface is refined using a progression of sanding grits, moving from rough paper to a medium 100-grit and a sanding sponge. The final result is a smoothed, primed surface that is ready for paint in about an hour after the final coating.

While the goal is not necessarily perfection—as old buildings possess their own character—the technique effectively brings an aged space back to life through careful preparation and 'elbow grease'.
