Mastering the art of the cat hole for primitive camping
In short: For many beginners, the most daunting part of camping isn't the wildlife or the weather, but the bathroom. When you are far from modern plumbing, you must learn to manage waste responsibly to keep your campsite and the surrounding environment clean and safe.
When camping in the woods, managing waste requires a specific technique known as digging a cat hole. To maintain hygiene and protect the environment, you should locate your cat hole 100 to 200 feet away from your campsite, any water sources, and established trails. It is also vital to dig downhill from your camp to ensure that nothing washes back toward your living area.
For a standard cat hole in a wooded setting, the hole should be approximately eight inches deep and six inches wide. If you are camping on a beach, the hole should be shallower than the depth required for the woods. To make the process more comfortable, you can use natural features as makeshift supports. For example, digging a hole just a couple of feet from a small tree allows you to use the trunk for balance without touching surfaces that might host insects, such as slugs.
Once you have finished, the area must be properly restored. You should cover the hole with the soil you originally excavated to hide it. It is also wise to mark the location so that you or your companions do not accidentally step into the hole later. Finally, hygiene extends to your cleaning materials; you should never throw toilet paper into the hole. Instead, pack it out by placing it in a bag and disposing of it in a trash receptacle at your campsite.
