Why your tent is the worst place to store your camping snacks

In short: Many novice campers fear aggressive bears, but the real threat to your campsite is much smaller. From mice to raccoons, hungry scavengers are constantly searching for a scent. Learning to properly hang your supplies is the difference between a peaceful night and an unwanted midnight visitor.

While many travelers worry about bear attacks, these incidents are actually quite rare and typically occur only when humans approach curious bears too closely. Unless you are an experienced camper in grizzly bear territory, the primary concern isn't a predator attack, but rather the persistent interest of much smaller animals like squirrels, mice, and raccoons. To prevent these scavengers from entering your sleeping area, you must never store food or trash inside your tent.

Effective food storage relies on a method of scent containment and elevation. The first step is to double-bag everything using a combination of Ziploc bags, grocery bags, and garbage bags. It is vital to include anything with a scent, including items like toothpaste, which animals may find appealing. Once contained, these items should be suspended away from your immediate living space.

To properly hang your supplies, locate a sturdy tree at least 100 feet away from your tent. Find a solid branch roughly 15 feet high. Using a rope, you can hoist a sturdy container—such as a messenger bag—up to this branch, ensuring the bag hangs at least 10 feet away from the tree trunk. This distance is crucial because animals, particularly bears, have a reach that can allow them to access bags too close to the tree. In high-risk grizzly territories, you should supplement this method with heavy-duty canisters provided by forest services.
