How to install a durable fence gate for your pet
In short: A poorly built gate can fail quickly, but a professional installation ensures longevity. By following specific steps—from precise post depth to careful concrete mixing—you can create a custom opening that stands the test of time and keeps your pets safely contained.
Installing a fence gate requires more than just mounting wood to posts. According to landscape contractor Roger Cook, the process begins with creating two holes, each approximately 30 inches deep, using a post hole digger. If you encounter obstructions like rocks or bricks that the digger cannot handle, an iron digging bar can be used to loosen them. Once the holes reach the correct depth, the round end of that same digging bar can help compact the soil to the final level.
Stability depends heavily on the posts and the concrete used to secure them. Two 5”x5” pressure-treated posts serve as the foundation. After ensuring the posts are plumb in both directions using a level, the holes should be filled with concrete. It is important to mix the concrete in a wheelbarrow with a small amount of water, ensuring it is spread evenly without becoming too wet. The concrete should be filled until it sits 3 inches below grade, and a scrap piece of wood can be used to compact the mix and remove air bubbles.
Precision is key when setting the gate's dimensions. To ensure both posts are the same height, use a board and a level. To maintain the correct distance between the posts, use a scrap board that matches the width of the finished gate as a spacer. Once the posts are set, the hardware installation involves predrilling holes to attach hinges to both the gate sections and the posts—using lag screws for the latter—before finally adding locking hardware and a drop rod.
