The step-by-step mechanics of installing a hydraulic home elevator

How to Install a Home Elevator | Ask This Old House · 5:59 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Watch as Kevin O’Connor and an accessibility contractor demonstrate the technical process of installing a hydraulic lift designed to improve accessibility for a young man with disabilities.

The installation begins with a concrete pad to serve as the base. The process involves hoisting tower sections using a chain pull, leveling them, and stabilizing the structure with bolted legs. Once the tower sections are combined, the hydraulic reservoir is filled with transmission fluid.

The final stages focus on the platform and enclosure. After securing the platform base and floor, 42-inch panels are attached to three sides. An enclosure is then installed to protect the lift from environmental elements like rain, snow, and wind.
