How a pellet stove uses recycled wood to heat your living room efficiently

How to Install a Pellet Stove | This Old House · 7:10 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey and installer Rob Dardano demonstrate the process of adding a pellet stove as a supplemental heat source. This video details the mechanical setup, from the automated fuel delivery system to the necessary wall modifications for safe exhaust and fresh air intake.

A pellet stove functions by burning wood pellets made from recycled wood products. The fuel is loaded into a hopper, where an electric auger automatically feeds the pellets into the combustion chamber. The entire process is managed by a thermostat, allowing for controlled heat output.

The installation process requires specific safety measures, including placing a heat-resistant pad on the floor. To manage ventilation, the installer cuts a hole through the wall—avoiding studs—and mounts protective plates on both sides. Two pipes are then installed: one for exhaust and a smaller, separate pipe to provide fresh air for combustion. Rob Dardano, who performed this installation, brings over 30 years of experience in hearth products to the project.
