Installing a pre-hung interior door, such as for a closet, requires more than simply sliding the unit into a rough opening. The process begins with establishing a baseline for levelness. Using a level, you must first locate a level spot within the rough opening and mark this position on both sides of the frame. This ensures that your subsequent measurements for the floor and header are consistent across the entire width of the opening.
The complexity lies in managing the discrepancy between the door's dimensions and the existing rough opening. After measuring the distance from the floor to the hinge side and the striker side, you must use these figures to mark the door itself. By measuring from your floor marks up to the top of the header, you can verify if the header is level. If the measurements differ between the hinge and striker sides, you may need to use a circular saw to trim the jambs to the correct length.
Once the door is positioned, the focus shifts to stability and plumbness.
