How a single handle prevents the sudden scald of a shower
In short: Old three-valve shower controls rely on separate handles for hot and cold water. But what happens when cold water pressure suddenly drops? A single-handle pressure-balance valve offers a safer, more efficient alternative for modern bathroom plumbing.
In traditional three-valve shower systems, the user manages three distinct components: one handle for hot water, one for cold, and a third diverter to direct flow between the tub spout and the showerhead. While functional, this setup is vulnerable to pressure fluctuations. If the cold water supply suddenly drops, the remaining hot water can surge, leading to dangerous temperature spikes and potential scalding.
The solution lies in the pressure-balance mixing valve, such as the Temptrol® model used by plumbing expert Richard Trethewey. Unlike the three-valve system, this single-handle valve is designed to maintain a consistent temperature by balancing the incoming pressures. The installation process is a delicate surgical procedure involving masonry work and precision soldering.
To replace an old system, the installer must first trace a manufacturer-supplied template onto the tile. Using a 3/16-inch-diameter masonry bit, a series of small holes are drilled around the perimeter. A 1/2-inch cold chisel is then used to carefully break the tile between these holes, creating a clean opening. Once the old valves are removed, the new valve body is centered in the wall.
To finish, use lead-free solder, fittings, and copper tubing to join the showerhead and tub spout lines with the cold and hot water inputs. After the connections are secured, the installation is finished by attaching a trim plate, the handle, and a matching spout, often chosen from various decorative trim packages.
