Mastering the art of the adhesive tile backsplash installation

How to Install a Simple Tile Backsplash | Ask This Old House · 9:01 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Transforming a kitchen wall doesn't require professional masonry skills. By using an adhesive mat and a few specific techniques, a homeowner can achieve a clean, professional finish. The secret lies in the preparation and the precise application of the grout to ensure a lasting, beautiful result.

A successful backsplash project begins with rigorous surface preparation. Before any tile touches the wall, the area must be thoroughly cleaned with a cleaner to eliminate grease and debris. To protect the kitchen, a drop cloth should be secured to the countertop using painter's tape, covering the entire workspace. Defining the boundaries of the project is equally vital; using painter's tape to mark exactly where the backsplash starts and stops prevents measurement errors later.

The core of this simplified method involves using a tile adhesive mat. After measuring the intended tiling space, the mat should be cut to size with scissors. When applying the mat, align the unexposed section against a straight surface, such as the existing countertop. Make sure the part where glue dots are spaced further apart sits over the following sheet. The installation follows a half-peel method: stick the top half of the mat to the wall first, then peel and adhere the bottom half.

Once the adhesive mat is secured and pressed with a rubber float for a permanent bond, the tiles themselves are added. After determining necessary cuts with a utility knife, the plastic coating is peeled from the mat, and tile sections are carefully placed and pressed into position. The final stage is grouting. Using premixed grout and a rubber float, fill the gaps diagonally. To clean, use a sponge and water to wipe excess grout from the tile faces diagonally, being careful not to remove grout from the joints. Note that a haze may appear after 24 hours, which can be removed with a simple wipe of a rag.
