How to transform falling rain into a recirculating garden water feature

How to Install a Water Feature that Reuses Rainwater | Ask This Old House · 6:45 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Instead of letting storm runoff vanish into drains, you can capture it to power a beautiful garden centerpiece. By integrating a downspout filter with a reservoir, you can create a sustainable ecosystem that reuses every drop of rainwater through basalt columns.

Creating a sustainable water feature requires more than just a basin; it involves a precise layering of materials to ensure durability and water retention. The process begins with site preparation, where it is essential to contact local utility marking services to identify underground pipes or wires before any digging occurs. The foundation involves excavating a hole approximately two feet deep and raking the soil until it is smooth and free of rocks.

The structural integrity of the feature relies on a specific sandwich of materials. After digging a separate hole for the pump vault, landscape fabric is laid down, followed by a rubber liner. This liner must be double the size of the intended area to allow it to wrap around the structural blocks. A second layer of landscape fabric is then placed over the rubber to protect it from the weight and friction of the blocks. Once the pump vault and blocks are leveled, the gaps are backfilled with stones.

The magic of the system lies in its plumbing. A downspout filter is installed by digging a hole beneath the nearest downspout, which then connects via pipe to the main reservoir. The plumbing for the pump and pipes is then routed through basalt columns, which feature one-inch holes. To finish the installation, the perimeter can be defined with field stone, and the rubber liner is folded over the structural blocks and backfilled with soil, providing a base for new plantings.
