How to transform a dark deck into an inviting evening retreat
In short: A single, bright spotlight often leaves outdoor spaces feeling harsh and uninviting. By installing discreet, undermount LED strip lights, you can illuminate walking paths and create a warm atmosphere without visible fixtures. Master electrician Heath Eastman demonstrates how to achieve this professional look for just a few hundred dollars.
The primary challenge in deck lighting is achieving illumination without the light source itself being visible. To prevent the LED strips from being an eyesore, Heath Eastman recommends setting the lights back approximately 1.5 inches from the edge of the railing. This placement ensures the light washes over the deck surface while keeping the hardware hidden.
Durability is the most critical factor when installing electronics outdoors. Because these lights are exposed to the elements, the installation process must include specific protective measures. Using mounting channels helps secure the strips, while brass barrel connectors should be encased in heat shrink tubing to protect wire connections from moisture. This method ensures the waterproof strip lights remain functional despite outdoor weather conditions.
A common technical pitfall in long-run lighting is voltage drop, which causes lights to appear dimmer at the far end of the circuit. To prevent this, the installation should not connect all strips in a single continuous loop. Instead, two ends should be left unconnected to serve as a feed wire, positioned centrally among the strip lights. This configuration maintains consistent brightness throughout the entire installation.
The complexity and cost of the project depend heavily on your existing infrastructure. If a power source or receptacle is already available near the deck, the project can be completed in just a few hours. However, if no outlet is nearby, you will need to run new cables and install a new receptacle, which significantly increases both the time and the total expense.
