The engineering behind a perfect outdoor string light display

How to Install Fiesta String Lights | All About Lights | Ask This Old House · 5:53 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Master electrician Scott Caron demonstrates how to move beyond basic hanging to a professional installation. This guide covers the structural requirements and electrical safety needed to create a durable, tensioned light display.

To ensure safety and longevity, the process begins with dedicated electrical work. Rather than using pre-made cables, the installation involves running three separate wire conductors through flexible conduit to connect an existing power source to an outdoor light switch and outlet box. These wires are spliced using pliers and secured with wire nuts.

The visual structure relies on stainless-steel components. Guide wires are run under tension across the roof using eye hooks, providing a stable framework. The fiesta string lights are then crisscrossed over these guide wires using S-hooks, preventing sagging and ensuring the lights remain secure in outdoor conditions.
