The mechanics of wiring a motion-activated security light

How to Install a Motion-Activated Security Light | All About Lights | Ask This Old House · 3:42 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Master electrician Scott Caron demonstrates how to properly integrate a motion-activated security light into a home's exterior. This guide covers the essential electrical steps and weatherproofing techniques needed to illuminate a dark driveway safely.

The installation process begins by identifying an existing power source and cutting the wire connections. To bring power to the exterior, a 1 3/8-inch spade bit is used to drill a hole through the siding for 14-gauge wire. The light fixture is then assembled and wired using connector nuts.

A critical step for longevity is weatherproofing: flexible putty is applied around the exterior hole to create a barrier against the elements. Finally, the setup includes a switch-over-outlet device, which allows the user to manually override the motion sensor if needed.
