The secret history of a modern interior design trend

How to Install Shiplap Panelling | This Old House · 5:23 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Shiplap is currently the most popular wall covering, but its origins are far from high-end interiors. This video explores how to achieve the look while explaining the difference between authentic construction and modern aesthetics.

While often associated with contemporary home design, shiplap originated as a functional siding for barns and sheds. Authentic shiplap features overlapping joints on both sides that create a small reveal as the wood shrinks over time.

In this project, contractor Tom Silva demonstrates a common alternative: butting 1x8 stock together to mimic the look. To ensure a professional finish where boards may shrink, the wall is first covered in tar paper to hide any gaps between the panels.
