In short: Wiring a new construction project requires precision, safety, and strict adherence to local building codes. Master electrician Scott Caron outlines the fundamental process for installing rough electricity, from mounting boxes at specific heights to securing cables through studs. Understanding these technical requirements is the first step toward a functional space.

Before beginning any electrical installation, it is necessary to obtain a building permit from your local building department. This ensures that the work meets safety standards and legal requirements. Once permitted, the process begins with the installation of new work electrical boxes. These boxes must be mounted at precise heights: 18 inches to the center for outlets and 48 inches to the center for light switches. Securing these boxes directly to the studs provides the necessary stability for the entire system.

The layout of your outlets is governed by specific code requirements designed to ensure accessibility. From any point along a wall, an outlet must be within 6 feet. To run the wiring, holes should be drilled through the center of every stud. Using 14-gauge cable, you must feed the wire through these holes, ensuring enough slack is left at each box to allow for future work. Once positioned, the cable must be secured with a staple within 6 inches of the box. Stripping 8 inches of sheathing allows the wire to be fed into the box for final connections.

Managing the internal connections requires careful attention to grounding and circuit routing. In boxes containing multiple conductors, all bare ground wires must be spliced together and capped with a green wire nut, with one bare wire left exposed. The circuit path typically runs from the outlet, through the switch box, and on to the first light fixture, with subsequent fixtures connected in sequence. Cables for ceiling lights should be attached to joists using staples. Finally, the feed wire is tied to the circuit panel, but only after confirming that the power is completely turned off to prevent accidents.
