Transforming a cold, bare basement into a warm, functional living space
In short: General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates the essential steps for preparing and insulating concrete basement walls. This guide covers sealing leaks and installing a framework to support new wallboard, providing a practical foundation for converting unfinished areas into usable rooms.
To prepare a basement for finishing, contractor Tom Silva first addresses moisture by sealing holes in the concrete walls with hydraulic cement. This material is chosen because it expands while curing, creating a reliable, watertight barrier against external water seepage.
Once the concrete is sealed, 2-inch thick foam insulating board is applied directly to the walls using a specialized adhesive. To finish the structure, Silva installs a grid of 1x3 spruce boards over the foam, secured with masonry spring spikes. This wooden grid serves two purposes: it provides a surface for attaching drywall screws and creates a necessary cavity for routing electrical wiring and installing outlets or light switches.
