The construction of a cigar box guitar relies on specific geometric layouts to ensure the strings vibrate correctly. The process begins with the neck—a piece of oak where precise markings dictate the placement of tuning pegs and string anchors. For instance, horizontal marks are spaced exactly 1 inch apart, while vertical lines must be positioned about 3/8 of an inch from each other. This grid system ensures that the holes for the eyebolts and string anchors are aligned to provide structural integrity and proper tension.
Key components like the bridge and nut serve as the mechanical anchors for the strings. The bridge, a small piece of wood placed 6 inches from the top, supports the vibration, while the nut sits 1.5 inches from the bottom to lift the strings off the neck. To create playable notes, frets are fashioned from nails secured with rubber bands and ground smooth. This DIY approach mimics professional lutherie by managing string height and spacing through manual adjustments like drilling pilot holes for wood screws.
