Mastering the knot: how to weave a classic Cobra friendship bracelet

In short: The Cobra knot is a staple of handmade jewelry, creating a textured, braided look. While it appears complex, the entire pattern relies on a repetitive series of diagonal loops and pulls. By mastering the simple 'D' shape, you can create infinitely customizable patterns and colors.

To start making a Cobra bracelet, prepare these items: one 30-inch length of rat tail cord doubled over, plus two 60-inch strands of embroidery floss, each also folded in half. The process starts by placing the embroidery floss underneath the rat tail cord and tying a knot at the center. This knot is then shifted to the top to create a loop. For stability during weaving, it is helpful to tape this loop to a piece of cardboard and secure the bottom of the rat tail cord through two slits at the base of the board.

The core mechanism of the Cobra pattern is the creation of a 'D' shape. You start by forming a 'D' with your primary color cord—for example, burgundy. You then take the second color cord, such as purple, and pass it diagonally underneath the existing cords and into the loop of the 'D' before pulling it through. To maintain the pattern, you must rotate the side on which you create the 'D' each time, ensuring you always start the 'D' shape with the color you are currently working with.

As you continue this side-to-side pulling and tightening, the bracelet grows in length. You can continue the process until the piece is long enough to fit a wrist. For added functionality, some crafters add a bead to the end of the bracelet, allowing the loop to pass through the bead so the piece can be easily taken on and off.
