How to sculpt a tiny sheep using only fondant and water
In short: Transforming simple sugar paste into a charming cake decoration requires more than just shaping. By using cornstarch to manage stickiness and water as a structural adhesive, you can create a detailed, upright sheep that stands ready for your next celebration.
Creating a fondant sheep begins with the body. Start by coating white fondant in cornstarch to prevent unwanted stickiness. Once coated, roll the fondant into a ball to form the core, then flatten it slightly. To achieve a realistic texture, use a piping tip with a circular end to press patterns all around the surface of the body.
The head and facial features require black fondant. While you could make this yourself, using store-bought black fondant saves significant time. Roll the black fondant into a ball for the head, then pinch the end to create a wider mouth. Use a pointed tool to define the nose and a small ball tool to create indentations for the eyes. For the ears, pull and flatten small pieces of fondant on both sides of the head.
To complete the figure, roll four small, ball-sized pieces of black fondant for the feet. Use water as a glue, applying it to the corners of the body to attach each foot. For the eyes, place small white pearls into the eye indentations after applying a bit of water to the dents. Finally, use water to attach the head to the body. For the best results, let the finished sheep dry overnight so it remains upright and stable during cake decoration.
This process relies on the adhesive properties of water to bond the different components together, ensuring the sheep is structurally sound for display.
