How to sculpt a fondant cow for your next farm animal cake
In short: Transforming simple sugar paste into a charming farm animal requires a few specific techniques. From managing stickiness with cornstarch to using water as a culinary glue, learn the precise steps to create a custom cow decoration that can set overnight for your next celebration.
Creating a fondant cow begins with the body, which is shaped from white fondant. To prevent the sugar paste from sticking to your hands or work surface, you must roll it in cornstarch. Start by rolling a golf ball-sized piece of white fondant and shaping it into an oval. To form the legs, pinch four corners on the oval and then flatten the piece slightly before setting it aside.
Next, construct the head by rolling another piece of white fondant into a ball, coating it in cornstarch, and flattening it. You can create ears by gently pinching the top of the head. For the facial details, roll a small piece of pink fondant into an oval and flatten the edges to create a mouth. Use water as a glue to attach this mouth to the face. You can then use a tip tool to indent the nose and eyes.
To finish the cow, create small pink circles for the legs by rolling pink fondant into balls roughly the size of a sugared pearl, then flattening them. Attach these to the corners of the legs using water. Use a black marker to add spots to the body, head, and face to complete the look. Finally, join the head to the body using water as an adhesive. For the best results, allow the figure to dry overnight before placing it on your cake.
