The temporary surgery required to move a box spring up stairs
In short: Moving a rigid box spring up a narrow staircase often feels like an impossible physical feat. However, a specific construction technique allows you to temporarily dismantle and fold the frame, transforming a bulky obstacle into a manageable shape that can be carried into a home.
To navigate a narrow staircase, general contractor Tom Silva suggests a method of temporary structural modification. The process begins by laying the box spring facedown on a tarp and using a slotted screwdriver to pry up the staples securing the fabric to the bottom. Once the fabric is peeled back to reveal the wood frame, the metal support bar must be removed to allow for the necessary folding.
The core of the maneuver involves cutting the 1x3 wood strapping on the long sides of the frame using a handsaw. After cutting the strapping, the box spring can be folded in half and secured with a long bungee cord. This allows the user to carry the item up the stairs and into the bedroom. Once inside, the process is reversed: the bungee cord is removed, the frame is flattened, and the cut strapping is reattached using 2 1/2-inch-long screws into 5/32-inch-diameter pilot holes.
The final stage of the 'surgery' involves restoring the structural integrity of the bed base. This includes replacing the removed metal support with a new 1x3 piece cut to the correct length and screwing it into the wood frame. Any wires that were badly bent during the move are straightened using a hammer and a 2x4 block. Finally, the fabric is stapled back onto the underside, returning the box spring to its original state.
This method highlights a practical approach to home improvement: understanding the underlying mechanics of furniture construction to solve logistical problems. By identifying the specific points of tension—the strapping and the support bar—you can temporarily compromise the object's rigidity to overcome physical constraints, then systematically repair it to ensure its continued function.
