How to fix a wobbly newel post using only a single screw
In short: General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates a straightforward method for stabilizing a loose newel post. By using a brace and a long screw, you can secure the post firmly to the stair tread, restoring structural integrity to your staircase with minimal hardware.
The repair process centers on fastening the newel post directly to the stair tread. To ensure the post is positioned correctly before securing it, a brace fashioned from scrap wood is used to press the post tightly against the tread. A layout square serves as a guide for drilling.
The procedure requires drilling a counterbore hole with a spade bit, followed by creating clearance and pilot holes using extra-long drill bits. Once the extra-long, flat-head screw is driven into place, the hole is concealed with wood putty. After the putty dries, it is smoothed with 150-grit sandpaper, then finished with primer and paint to match the surrounding area.
