Master the art of refreshing your metal front entry door

How to Paint an Exterior Metal Door | Ask This Old House · 5:04 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Painter Mauro Henrique demonstrates a professional approach to repainting an exterior metal door, covering everything from surface preparation to achieving a smooth, streak-free finish.

The process begins by removing the door from its hinge pins and placing it on saw horses. After removing the hardware, the surface must be lightly sanded with 400 grit sandpaper and cleaned using a HEPA vacuum with a dust attachment, followed by a wipe-down with a wet rag.

For the application, use a 2-inch angled synthetic brush to cut around panels and trim, then switch to a microfiber roller for the remaining areas. To minimize visible stroke marks, use light pressure and long strokes. The project requires two coats, allowing an hour or two of drying time between them before rehanging the door.
