Why your front door might be fighting with your entryway rug

In short: A minor clearance issue can turn a functional entrance into a daily frustration. When an exterior door catches on a rug, the solution isn't always replacing the hardware. Instead, contractors use a precise sequence of trimming and threshold modification to restore smooth movement without compromising the home's structural integrity.

The process begins by addressing the door itself. To ensure a clean cut that preserves the existing finish, general contractor Tom Silva recommends removing the door from its hinges first. By using a track saw—a circular saw guided by a metal rail—the craftsman can trim the bottom of the door with high precision. This method is preferred because it protects the surrounding wood and accelerates the cutting process compared to freehand methods.

After trimming, the raw wood must be treated immediately to prevent moisture damage or staining. This involves sanding the new edges and using a block plane to ease them out. A layer of primer is applied to the bottom of the door to seal the exposed grain before any final adjustments are made to the floor area.

The most technical phase involves creating a custom filler piece for the threshold. Rather than simply cutting the door, the contractor measures the specific gap between the threshold and the door on both sides. A piece of red oak is then cut to size using a table saw. This filler piece acts as a buffer; it is beveled on its inside edge to match the angle of the door's swing, stained to match the existing wood, and secured with wood glue and brad nails.

This approach highlights a fundamental principle of home restoration: solving a mechanical conflict by modifying the interface rather than the primary structure. By creating a custom-fitted transition between the door and the floor, the homeowner maintains the aesthetic of the original entry while eliminating the physical obstruction caused by the rug.
