Mastering the Reggae Groove on Acoustic Guitar Using Only Your Fingers

How to Play Reggae | Fingerstyle Guitar · 3:31 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Reggae is defined by its signature sharp, rhythmic chords on the upbeats, but you do not need a pick to achieve that sound. By utilizing your thumb, index, middle, ring, and pinkie fingers, you can replicate the genre's distinct bass lines and staccato chord stabs on a standard acoustic guitar.

To capture the essence of reggae on guitar, you must focus on the upbeats. While counting one, two, three, four, the chords are played on the 'and' of each beat. The technique requires a specific finger arrangement: your pinkie rests on the first string, your ring finger on the second, and your middle finger on the third. This configuration allows you to execute the crisp, short chord strikes that define the genre's rhythmic feel.

The secret to the staccato sound lies in muting. After striking a chord, you must immediately lift your fingers slightly, keeping them in contact with the strings to stop the sound without pulling them entirely away. This prevents open strings from ringing out, maintaining the tight, percussive quality required for the style. For chord shapes, you can start with a simple C triad, using your third finger for C, fourth for E, and first for G, then shifting that same shape to play G and F major triads.

Managing the bass line alongside these chords requires coordination. Because the bass notes often move too quickly for the thumb alone, you can free up your index finger by using your other three fingers for the chords. By combining the thumb and index finger for the bass line, you can maintain the necessary speed and fluidity. This fingerstyle approach transforms the guitar into a self-contained rhythm section, allowing you to play the bass and the offbeat chords simultaneously.
