In short: More than just a melody, the Sevillanas relies on a specific rhythmic cycle. To play this popular flamenco style, you must master the interplay between steady beats and sudden, syncopated shifts. These rhythmic changes are essential for signaling to the singers and dancers exactly when it is time to begin.

Sevillanas is a beloved flamenco style, particularly prominent in the South of Spain, where it serves as the rhythmic foundation for a widespread dance. Unlike many flamenco forms that utilize the Phrygian mode, Sevillanas does not strictly adhere to specific chord progressions like the B Flat sound found in other modes. Instead, the music is defined by its 3/4 time signature and a recurring two-measure cycle.

The basic compas begins in the tonic key. In a common arrangement using A Major, the first measure starts with a thumb downstroke on beat one, followed by two rasgueados on beats two and three. A key technical detail involves using the index finger to create a groove on beat three, often incorporating pickup notes played with the middle and annular fingers. The second measure typically moves to the dominant chord, such as E Major or E7, following a similar pattern of a thumb downstroke and two raspeados.

A defining characteristic of this style is the rhythmic tension in the second measure: the player performs a rasgueado on beat three to resolve back to the tonic chord, rather than waiting for the next measure to begin. This creates a sense of forward momentum.

To transition from improvisation to performance, guitarists use a section called a llamada. This serves as a signal to singers and dancers that the music is about to change. During a llamada, the guitarist might hold beat two over beat three or alter the sequence of rasgueados to alert the ensemble. Once the call concludes, the singers typically enter with a long phrase lasting approximately two measures before the dance officially begins.
