The pancake wrist and the finger platform: mastering violin hand placement

How to Position Your Left Hand | Violin Lessons · 3:29 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Achieving a beautiful tone on the violin requires more than just talent; it demands precise physical geometry. From the angle of your thumb to the specific fleshy part of your fingertips, your left hand must form a stable, structural foundation to support every note.

Proper left-hand positioning begins with the neck of the violin. Once the instrument is securely placed on your shoulder, the focus shifts to the thumb. For beginners, a helpful trick is to place a physical marker, such as a sticker or even a pharmacy corn remover, on the neck to guide placement. The thumb should point slightly toward the scroll, maintaining a relaxed state that leans toward the straver side rather than being heavily bent. This placement occurs once you have already ensured the violin is positioned beautifully and correctly on your shoulder.

The architecture of the arm is equally critical. To avoid tension or instability, the arm must remain very straight. The goal is to achieve a wrist that is perfectly flat, much like a pancake, extending in a straight line from the elbow all the way to the palm. Any deviation, such as the wrist coming too far in or out, disrupts this essential alignment. While the arm's straightness is vital, the specific position of your elbow may shift slightly depending on which string you are currently playing.

Finally, the fingers must create what can be described as a 'platform' for the notes. This is achieved by pressing the strings down using only the very tip of the finger's fleshy part, avoiding both the fingernail and the extreme tip. When fingers are positioned correctly, they create a series of stable platforms for the second, third, and fourth fingers. If the fingers are too flat, the 'platform' disappears, making it impossible to support the note—metaphorically described as a pizza falling off its base. This technique applies to the first, second, third, and fourth fingers as you navigate the instrument's strings.
