Transforming a salvaged door into a custom prehung unit for your home opening

In short: Repurposing an antique door requires more than just hinges and a frame. By constructing a custom jamb assembly, you can integrate a salvaged piece into a modern opening. General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates the precise sequence of measuring, cutting, and shimming required to ensure your vintage door functions perfectly today.

The process begins by assessing the existing environment. Using a four-foot level, you must determine if the floor is level, as this measurement dictates the length of the jamb's long side. It is also essential to measure the height of the jamb header on existing doors in the house to ensure the new installation maintains visual consistency. Once these dimensions are established, a miter saw is used to cut the jamb components to the correct length.

Assembly requires careful attention to detail. After predrilling holes with a countersinking bit, the jamb pieces are joined using 3-inch screws. A reveal of 1/8-inch is marked for the casing, which is then attached using 8d finish nails. The head casing must overhang the side casing by 1/8-inch on each side. To maintain structural integrity during transport, a temporary filler strip is attached across the bottom of the jamb to keep the assembly square.

Installation involves a iterative process of fitting and adjustment. After test-fitting the assembly in the opening, wood shims are used to make one side of the jamb plumb. The jamb is then clamped flush with the drywall or plaster and screwed through the shims into the framing. This process is repeated for the opposite side. Finally, the door is tested, additional shims are placed behind the locket, and the shims are cut flush with the jamb before the final casing is applied to the remaining side.

This method allows homeowners to preserve original architectural elements while achieving the functionality of a modern prehung door. All necessary materials, including nails, shims, and hardware, are readily available at standard home centers. The project highlights the expertise of the Ask This Old House team, which includes Tom Silva, Kevin O'Connor, Richard Trethewey, and Roger Cook, as they address common home improvement challenges through practical, hands-on demonstrations.
