Why digging four feet deep is essential for a stable deck footing
In short: General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates the professional process for installing concrete deck footings. This guide explains how to determine placement, prepare the ground, and pour concrete to ensure your deck expansion remains secure and level through seasonal temperature changes.
To prevent frost heaving during winter, footings must be dug to a depth of 4 feet. The process begins by determining the required number and placement of supports before excavating holes wide enough to accommodate a plastic form. A cardboard form is then cut to the appropriate length and positioned atop the plastic base.
Once the forms are set, concrete is mixed in a wheelbarrow and poured into the structure. Metal reinforcing bars are inserted to increase the footing's strength, and the surface is screeded smooth. After the concrete has cured, wooden posts can be attached to the finished footing.
