Your feet aren't actually the source of that cheesy odor
In short: The foul smell of sweaty feet isn't caused by your sweat itself. It is a byproduct of bacteria breaking down moisture in your shoes. To stop the scent, you have to change the chemistry of your footwear and the environment of your skin.
The technical term for foot odor is bromodosis. Each human foot contains approximately 300,000 sweat glands. While sweat is mostly water, the odor occurs when bacteria break down that perspiration, creating a waste product that smells like cheese. Because of this, simply washing your feet is often insufficient if the underlying moisture and bacterial load remain high.
A common point of contention involves sheepskin footwear like UGGs. Many believe these boots are 'breathable' enough to be worn without socks. However, Dr. John Fritz notes that going sockless allows bacteria and sweat to bypass the socks and settle directly into the boot's liner. This creates a persistent, foul odor that is difficult to remove. To combat this, experts recommend wearing socks to trap moisture and using moisture-wicking materials to keep the skin dry.
For those with excessive perspiration, specific chemical and home remedies can alter the foot's environment. Tannic acid, found in tea, can be used in a soak to reduce sweating. Alternatively, a hypoallergenic antiperspirant can be applied to the feet (avoiding deodorants, which may cause rashes). For existing odors in footwear, methods include overnight treatments with a quarter cup of baking soda, activated charcoal briquettes, or UV boot sanitizers to kill the bacteria directly.
