In short: Preserving your garden through the winter requires more than just waiting for spring. By focusing on strategic watering, careful clean-up, and physical protection, you can safeguard the hard work from your spring and summer seasons against harsh elements like frost, wind, and heavy snow.

Winter preparation begins well before the first frost. While many associate mulching with spring, applying two to four inches of bark mulch, hay, or shredded leaves in the late fall helps insulate roots and retain moisture. This prevents the soil from becoming too dry, as plants often face a water deficit during October and November before the December freeze arrives.

The method of maintenance depends heavily on the plant type. For perennials, it is recommended to cut them back to within two inches of the soil once they begin to brown. Annuals should be removed and moved to a compost pile, which provides an opportunity to plant bulbs in the vacated holes. Providing winter texture is an option for ornamental grasses, though you may prune them during late February or early March prior to new growth.

Physical barriers provide essential protection against wind and snow. Burlap, secured with twine, can protect plants in high-traffic or windy areas while still allowing necessary airflow and moisture. For shrubs, twine can be used to hold branches together to prevent structural damage from heavy snow. Additionally, anti-desiccants can be sprayed on broadleaf evergreens to trap moisture inside the leaves, preventing wind from drying them out.

For container plants, you can prevent root freezing by wrapping them in straw or bubble polythene, or by plunging the pot into the ground with only the rim showing. In exposed areas, consider using windbreaks like hedges or permeable fences to reduce turbulence and prevent plants from being uprooted by wet, windy soil.
