Why a rushed brick walkway is destined to fail

In short: A poorly constructed brick path is often the result of a rushed job. To build a walkway that stays level and resists the elements, you must focus on the foundation. Success requires a sturdy, consistent base and specific layering techniques to prevent bumps and weed growth.

The primary cause of an uneven or bumpy walkway is insufficient compaction of the base layers. Professional mason Mark McCullough suggests that a successful project requires digging a trench approximately 6 to 8 inches deep to establish a firm foundation. Once the soil is compacted, the first structural layer should consist of about 3 inches of crushed stone. This specific depth is vital because it facilitates water drainage and helps mitigate the movement caused by freeze and thaw cycles.

Following the crushed stone, a layer of stone dust is applied to create a smooth, flat surface for the bricks. To ensure the bricks remain stable and weeds do not penetrate the joints, the stone dust must be swept into the cracks and then rinsed with a light spray of water. This process causes the dust to settle deeper into the gaps. Because the surface may look gapped again once dry, a second coat of stone dust should be applied and swept in to create a tight, solid finish.

The orientation of the bricks also impacts the aesthetic and ease of construction. While some homeowners lay bricks side-to-side, installing them end-to-end is often more visually pleasing and requires fewer cuts. Finally, to prevent the bricks from shifting, the path must be contained by edging. Using a plastic edging, such as Vigoro's No-Dig Landscape Edging, helps hold the entire structure in place and ensures long-term stability.
