The mechanical method for clearing overgrown foundation shrubbery

How to Remove and Replace Foundation Plantings | This Old House · 4:14 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Landscape contractor Roger Cook demonstrates how to efficiently clear old foundation plantings to improve curb appeal. The video provides a systematic approach to removing heavy shrubs while protecting your home's underground utilities.

The process involves using a compact utility loader equipped with a steel-tooth attachment to yank out old shrubs. To do this safely, a heavy chain is wrapped around the shrub and attached to the loader's teeth. Once pulled, the root ball is struck against the ground to remove excess soil.

Safety is a priority: the guide advises calling a utility company to mark underground cables and gas lines before starting. If a line is detected near a plant, the shrub should be cut flush with the ground using a chainsaw rather than pulled. New replacements should be staggered and placed at least 24 inches from the foundation.
