Why your garden's success depends on the depth of your mulch

How to Mulch a Garden Bed | Ask This Old House · 8:13 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Proper mulching is more than just covering the dirt. Landscape contractor Roger Cook demonstrates the precise technique required to protect your plants while maintaining a clean, manageable garden bed.

The process begins with preparation: cutting a fresh border with a manual edger and removing old mulch to reveal the topsoil. This old mulch, along with excavated soil and grass, should be moved to a compost bin. For trees, the video emphasizes removing secondary root growth with pruning shears and clearing old debris from the base.

The key to a professional finish lies in the application. After hauling in a new truckload, mulch should be raked to a depth of 1 to 2 inches. Crucially, it must be kept away from the base of plants and trunks to prevent damage, and raked back from the outer edges to allow for easier grass trimming.
