How to restore function to a broken doorbell

How to Repair a Broken Doorbell | Ask This Old House · 6:44 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Master electrician Scott Caron demonstrates the process of replacing a broken chime and push button to restore your home's entry signaling system.

The repair involves two main components: the chime and the push button. To replace a chime, you must first disconnect the power and carefully mark the existing wire connections for the front door, transformer, and rear door to ensure correct reassembly.

After mounting the new chime, the push button can be replaced by unscrewing the old unit and attaching new wires to the existing connections. Note that if you are installing a digital chime, you may need to incorporate diodes provided with the new unit.
